Riddle: Barrel and the Box
Posted on 24. Jun, 2009 by Jake in brain teasers
Riddle:
There is a barrel with no lid and some wine in it. “This barrel of wine is more than half full,” said Curly. “No it’s not,” says Mo. “It’s less than half full.”
Without any measuring implements and without removing any wine from the barrel, how can they easily determine who is correct?
Answer:
Tilt the barrel until the wine barely touches the lip of the barrel. If the bottom of the barrel is visible, then it is less than half full. If the barrel bottom is completely covered by the wine, then it is more than half full.
Riddle:
Follow these steps and see if you can figure this out.
1. Get a brown, cardboard box.
2. Get purple, orange, and turquoise paints.
3. Paint the box orange.
4. Paint on purple spots.
5. Paint on turquoise stripes.
7. Turn it upside down.
8. Lie on your side.
What is missing from this sequence?
hint..

The first one is easy assuming you do not want dead accuracy and that you have a symmetrical barrel.
Just stand the barrel upright. Let the liquid settle down.
Tap the side of the barrel, from bottom to top. The sound will change at the point where the wine meets the air. Make a mark on the barrel and see if it is halfway.
Second one is missing step 6.
